Promote education in Tanzania by giving a Bicycle to vulnerable students
In Tanzania primary and secondary school education was made free to allow all children to access education in the country something which lead to increase an enrollment, However many children are still unable to attend schools regularly due to a number of factors such as lack of transport access especially in the rural areas and other economic factors like the cost of school supplies like exercise books, shoes, uniforms, text books, pencils and pen.
Project description
We have made a research by visiting some primary schools in Moshi and we identified that 95% of all students who graduated primary education in 2015 have passed National examination and qualify to join secondary schools.
Then from there we visited some public secondary schools we realized that each year a number of students who attend and finish their studies is less than 50% of all students who ware selected to join public secondary schools.
To understand why students do not attend schools regularly, the interviews was done with some village leaders, head of schools, students who dropped from schools, we revealed that one of the reason why students does not attend schools as normal is the long distance from home to the schools where these students go to study, so this shows that there is a need to help students who live far away from their schools so that they can attend to school as those how live nearby the schools.
Together, NDOTO HUB and other main stake holders decided to provide bicycles to vulnerable students especially females who live far away from their schools so that to improve education in Tanzania, we will donate bicycles to vulnerable students who have been selected to join public secondary schools in Moshi Kilimanjaro which are far from their homes, from the list of vulnerable students we will select students with the best results who have reported to schools, but also we will base on the attendance, performance and distance from their homes.
Purpose of the Project and why the project is needed
The project is intended to empower vulnerable students who graduated primary education from public schools to access public secondary education. These poor vulnerable students have to walk between 4 to 7 Kilometers from their homes to schools in the morning and back home in the evening after studies, so we want to provide bicycles to them so that they can reach to schools on time and have a fully school day and ample time to concentrate on their studies and this will improve their performance in schools, the bicycle will also help to carry their peers who face the same challenge. The main purpose of the project is to promote education among the vulnerable students through reduction of truancy, early teenage pregnancies and increase the number of students who attend secondary education.
Importance/ outcome of the project
One of the bicycle project goal is to reduce teenage pregnancies and truancy, most of the vulnerable students walk between five to seven (4-7 kilometers) to schools. Because of walking long distances to schools some of these students decide to absent themselves from class which leads to truancy and drop out of schools. some of the girls are attracted or tempted to get a motobike ride from the people with bad intention while going to schools so they end up getting raped or impregnated and this lead to teenage pregnancies. If they had their own bikes to ride they would reach to schools early and this will reduce teenage pregnancies and truancy.
The project will have positive outcome to the most vulnerable students, for example it will reduce truancy because students will have their own means of transport to schools, also it will reduce early teenage pregnancy, and will improve performance of the vulnerable students who live far from schools.
Target Group
The target group are the orphans, and the most vulnerable students who have lost their parents and who have caregivers who can can not afford to buy a bicycle for their children for transportation to school and back home. We have been working with vulnerable children for a long time so we know what the vulnerable children go through in the process of trying achieve their life goals and dream especially in education sector, this lead us to find a way to abolish this challenge in Tanzania.
Sustainability of the project
We expect to buy new bicycles which are durable and can withstand rough roads of our communities. These bikes will belong to the public schools ware vulnerable students attend. Once the bikes are given to them, the students will be trained on how to repair and mantain the bikes.
Beneficiary students will use the bikes for only four years of their studies (form 1 to form 4) then the bikes will be given to the new next group of vulnerable students who will qualify to be supported after joining the same public schools.
Therefore, the students will not own the bikes forever, and this will ensure sustainability of the bicycle project.
Our goal is to work alongside inspiring, motivated, and deeply passionate individuals, but to continue to build a community where education is respected and difference is celebrated.
Please take this opportunity to leave a lasting impact on vulnerable children's life.
Any one who would like to get deeper involved, please email us and we can discuss possible opportunities in more detail.
Please also help spread awareness by sharing this project with your friends, family, colleagues, or whoever may be interested in our project.
